CIELAB is the most useful of the three for comparing colors, because its numbers track how different two colors look: L* is lightness from 0 to 100, C* is chroma, or how far from grey a color sits, and h° is the hue angle.

What the numbers say about each color

Sherwin-Williams Celery

Celery has an HSL saturation of 36% but a lightness of 81%, which is why it reads as a pale, almost creamy green rather than a bright one. Its CIELAB hue angle of about 105° sits on the yellow side of green, and its chroma of 17 is modest. The complement, #BDC0E0, is a soft periwinkle: a useful accent when you want contrast without a loud color.

Behr Grounded

With an HSL saturation of just 10% and a lightness of 35%, Grounded behaves more like a warm charcoal than a true green, and its CIELAB chroma is under 9. Because its HEX is an approximation, treat its palette as a direction rather than exact values. Its complement is a blue slate, #505361.

Valspar Cottage Door

At HSL 197°, 12%, 54%, Cottage Door is a greyed cyan-blue right in the middle of the lightness scale. Artifact (HSL 199°, 14%, 48%) is its darker neighbor; the two are 5.7 apart in CIEDE2000. The complement, #97827A, is a muted rosy taupe, and Dutch Boy Deep Rooted, at an HSL hue of 21°, sits within a few degrees of that complementary direction, which is why the two read so well together.

Glidden / PPG Artifact

Artifact's white-text contrast is 4.1:1, just under the 4.5:1 that WCAG AA asks for body text, so on a website or slide keep white for large headings only; black text clears AA at 5.1:1. Its triadic partners, #8B6980 (a dusty plum) and #808B69 (a sage olive), make an unexpectedly gentle three-color scheme because all three share the same low saturation.

Dutch Boy Deep Rooted

Dulux Soulful Sage

Dulux has not published a HEX value for Soulful Sage, so there are no computed values or palettes for it here yet. For a working value, sample a Dulux chip or a painted wall in daylight and treat the reading as a starting point.

Complementary, analogous, split and triadic palettes

Each palette is computed by rotating the pick's hue around the HSL color wheel while keeping its saturation and lightness: 180° for the complement, 30° either side for analogous colors, 150° and 210° for the split complement, and 120° either side for a triad. A HEX code is not a paint formula

A HEX value describes light coming out of a screen in the sRGB color space; paint is a mix of pigments that reflects light, so the same color will look different on a phone, a monitor, a print and a wall. Brands publish HEX values as an on-screen approximation. Use the codes on this page for mood boards, presentations, websites and digital mockups, and use the brand's own name and number when you buy paint: SW 6421 for Celery, T27-01 for Grounded, 8004-38E for Cottage Door, PPG10-16 for Artifact and 311-7DB for Deep Rooted.
