Why matching existing wall color is hard without the app
Paint colors shift over time as they age, fade, or react to cleaning. A chip from the current wall is never exactly the original color. And even if you have the original paint can, the batch mixed today may not exactly match the batch mixed years ago.
The app samples the actual color currently on your wall and finds the nearest match in today's available paint products — accounting for the fact that you're matching the aged color, not the original formula.
Getting the best scan for color matching
Scan in the best-lit area of the wall — ideally near a window in daytime, away from shadows or direct sunlight. The app samples a cluster of pixels to average out any texture or minor variation in the paint surface, returning a more stable color reading than a single-point sample.
If the room has multiple walls with slightly different colors (due to patching, repaints over time, or light variation), scan each wall separately and compare the results before deciding which match to order.
Touch-up painting vs full room repaint
For small touch-ups, the closest match from the app will usually be close enough once dry. For a full wall or room repaint where the old and new paint will be seen side by side during the transition, ordering a small sample can from the matched color and testing a patch in an inconspicuous area before committing is still good practice.
The app marks how close the match is numerically — a ΔE (delta E) value of less than 2 is generally imperceptible to the eye, while a value of 3–5 may be visible under direct comparison but acceptable in most practical cases.
Finding a match at a different store than the original
If the original paint was from a brand not available in your current location, the app finds the nearest equivalent from any other brand you have access to. A Farrow & Ball color matched to a Benjamin Moore equivalent, for example, can be mixed at any Benjamin Moore dealer.
Results show which store carries each brand so you know where to go to order the mix.
